Starter locs · Vaudreuil-Dorion
The method and the parting you start with are what your locs look like in year three. I will tell you which one suits your hair before I touch it, including if the photo you brought will not work on your texture.
Why people start twice
Starting over is the one repair I cannot do. It means combing out or cutting off everything you have grown since day one. Which is why I would rather spend the first twenty minutes telling you something you do not want to hear.
How your first appointment runs
Pick your method
The classic start. I coil each section with a comb. Best if your hair is on the shorter side. Neat right away, but the first few weeks need care because they can unravel in the wash.
I pull the end of each loc back through the root. Fewer locs, shorter appointment, and they hold well enough that you can wash sooner. Best if you are active or you wash often.
Same method, smaller sections. More locs means more hours, which is the whole reason it costs more than the big size.
I use a small hook to lock the hair together. This is the one to pick if you do not want to wait out the frizzy stage, because they look mature on day one instead of in month eight.
Adds length on day one using added hair. Pick this if you want to skip the short phase entirely.
Smaller loc sizes cost more because there are more locs to work on. A $50 deposit books your spot and comes off your final price, and you settle the rest at the end.
The first few weeks
My one promise
Not at the end. While I am working. Say the word and I will undo that section and redo it looser, at no charge and with no sighing. Tight locs are how people lose their hairline, and I am not doing that to yours to save myself twenty minutes.
Straight answers
Two to three inches is usually enough for comb coils. If yours is shorter, send me a photo before you book and I will tell you honestly whether to start now or wait another month. Waiting a month is cheaper than starting twice.
It should not. If anything feels tight while I am working, say so and I will take that section out and redo it. Locs installed tight damage your edges, and no look is worth that.
Interlocking, if you are active or you wash often. Comb coils give a softer look while they mature but they loosen faster. Tell me how often you wash and how much you sweat, and I will pick for you.
Comb coils and interlocks usually settle between six and twelve months. Crochet starter locs look mature the day you leave.
Some of it, yes. Sections can be re-parted while your locs are still young. It gets much harder once they are mature, which is why I spend so long getting it right the first time.
Yes, but wait until your locs are mature and talk to me first. Colour on young locs is a common way to end up needing repairs.
$50. It comes off your final price. It is not refundable and it stays with the appointment you booked, so if you cancel or move your date, booking again takes a new deposit.
With clean, detangled hair. Washed, dried, and combed out, no heavy product at the root. And on time, please. Starter locs are a four to six hour job and the clock does not stretch.
Yes, all three. Children get a lighter tension than adults, always.
